Reid's own goal helps United top West Brom

West Bromwich, England (Sports Network) - Manchester United opened defense of its Premiership title on Sunday with a 2-1 win over West Bromwich at The Hawthorns.

Wayne Rooney's goal in the 13th minute handed United an early lead, but Shane Long equalized before halftime with a low shot that should have been kept out by new United goalkeeper David De Gea.

Sir Alex Ferguson's team struggled to pick up wins on the road last season, but they grabbed all three points nine minutes from time when Ashley Young's shot deflected off the leg of West Brom's Steven Reid and into his own net.

Young enjoyed a strong debut for the Red Devils and he set up the opening goal when he picked out Rooney near the top of the penalty area. Rooney took a touch and then rolled a left-footed shot inside the right post to put his team in front.

Paul Scharner had a powerful shot parried by De Gea in the 35th minute, but the young 'keeper failed to keep out a low shot by Long that he should have saved just two minutes later.

However, United began to take control of the match as the second half wore on and they finally took the lead for good nine minutes from time when Young beat a defender on the left wing and carried the ball into the area.

He then drove a shot toward the front of goal but had it take a fortuitous bounce off the leg of Reid and into the net.
